Multi-digit Position and Force Coordination in Three- and Four-Digit Grasping

چکیده
In this paper, we investigate the redundancy problem by examining how humans control grasping of a hand-held object using threeand four-digits in response to external perturbations. Our results revealed a similar variability in digits’ initial placement when grasping with threeand four-digits. Moreover, the distribution of digit normal forces were modulated depending on the number of digits used, their locations, and the type of the external perturbations. Our results suggest that the redundancy problem was solved by the central nervous system in a similar fashion on a trial-to-trial basis in terms of digits’ initial placements, but differently in terms of digits normal force distribution that was controlled online depending on the number of digits actively involved in the grasp.

The control of whole hand grasping relies on complex coordination of multiple forces. While many studies have characterized the coordination of finger forces and torques, the control of hand muscle activity underlying multi-digit grasping has not been studied to the same extent. Motor unit synchrony across finger muscles or muscle compartments might be one of the factors underlying the limited ...
متن کاملDigit Position and Forces Covary during Anticipatory Control of Whole-Hand Manipulation
Theoretical perspectives on anticipatory planning of object manipulation have traditionally been informed by studies that have investigated kinematics (hand shaping and digit position) and kinetics (forces) in isolation. This poses limitations on our understanding of the integration of such domains, which have recently been shown to be strongly interdependent. Specifically, recent studies revea...

متن کاملTask-dependent modulation of multi-digit force coordination patterns.
When grasping and holding an object with five digits under a variety of task constraints, subjects use well-defined force coordination patterns, i.e., consistent force covariations and in-phase synchronization among all digit pairs. The question arises as to whether these force coordination patterns are default mechanisms for controlling multi-digit force production or whether they are specific...
متن کاملForce-independent distribution of correlated neural inputs to hand muscles during three-digit grasping.
The ability to modulate digit forces during grasping relies on the coordination of multiple hand muscles. Because many muscles innervate each digit, the CNS can potentially choose from a large number of muscle coordination patterns to generate a given digit force. Studies of single-digit force production tasks have revealed that the electromyographic (EMG) activity scales uniformly across all m...
